Walking Towards God III

2017

Turiya MAGADLELA

Mixed media

120 x 120 cm

Technique: Nylon and cotton pantyhose, wire, and putty on canvas

Turiya Magadlela focuses on abstraction and challenges the borders between categories. Her geometrical compositions of often folded or re-stitched pieces of cloth or cut-up pantyhose sculpt the surface of the canvas. The subtle plays of the colours and the transparency of warped and stretched materials evoke the nuances of gestural painting.

Afrique du Sud
Born in 1978

Born in 1978 in South Africa, Turiya Magadlela lives and works in Soweto. After completing her studies at the University of Johannesburg in 2001,from 2003 to 2004, Turiya Magadlela went on studying at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam.

The artist draws on her personal experience as a woman, a mother, and a black artist in the context of South African society, which is still largely coercive, to tackle questions related to otherness and women’s condition. The pantyhose, iconic element of her plastic work, evokes femininity, the question of autonomous spaces for women, and the relationships between personal and public spheres.
