Ghost XVI is part of a series where the work on fabrics and drapery carries a reflection on the body and its absence. Manon Pellan’s drawings always leave room for the whiteness of the paper: it highlights the absence of the motif the artist chose, and its poetry, just like the body’s partial absence.
“Our vision of fabric in general and clothing in particular is very ambiguous,” explains Manon Pellan. “It has a singular place for all of us, it can be a trivial object that we take off carelessly, a fetish that we store preciously, or a rag that we throw away without any guilt. Fabric evokes our relationship to the daily life, intimacy, and the body.”
A graduate of the Beaux-Arts de Rouen, Manon Pellan is an artist living in the Paris area. The graphite pencil is at the core of her practice: if she uses colours, it is always to highlight a contrast with the white of the background and the pencil’s graphic line. The meticulous care given to the details gives the whole a sense of abstraction: it creates a space revealing the texture of dreams, fabric, or a presence, and highlighting the void, the cracks where the artist wonders and questions the medium itself.
Usually, Manon Pellan bases the reflections feeding her work on elements of her daily life. Evoking frailty, absence, intimacy, fear, emptiness, and repulsion, her drawings are testimonies to our passage, and ultimately, to our death.
