Zilvinas Kempinas
1969
Lithuania
Zilvinas Kempinas was born in 1969 in Plungė, Lithuania. He lives and works in New York.
A graduate of the Hunter College in New York and the Vilnius Academy of Art, he creates installations using unspooled video tape to exploit its lightweight physical properties and the different ways in which it occupies space: an almost transparent thin edge when side on, and dramatically monumental when faced front on, creating a dense column.
He received the Calder Prize from the Calder Foundation in 2008. The Vienna Kunsthalle dedicated a personal exhibition to him in 2009 and that same year, he represented Lithuania at the Venise Biennale.
