Four spatial combinations of the same rectangle are presented here, demonstrating a range of visual implications despite the apparent economy of means. The technique creates a link between architecture and the surface of paints.

Alan Charlton
Grande-Bretagne
Born in 1948
A British painter.
After completing his studies in 1972, Charlton became interested in minimalist art: all his paintings are grey monochromes. They are presented differently depending on the exhibition space and lighting. The rectangular shape demonstrates a deliberate simplicity.
Each tone of grey is obtained by painting a number of extremely fine coats. The eye perceives this transparency through the change in intensity of the grey, which acts as an indicator of light.
Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Van Abbe Museum in Eindhoven, Museum of Modern Art of Paris, Museum of Contemporary Art in Lyon, Regional Fund for Contemporary Art in Brittany and the Midi-Pyrenees region.
