There is no hesitation inJivya Soma Mashe’s paintings. He gets directly to the core of the piece, bothin his drawings and composition, and focuses on the simplicity of what isobvious, naïve, and natural. Every detail in his paintings can attest to this.Strokes, lines and dots abound, teeming and vibrating on the canvas. They arearranged to match the skilfully crafted composition, which in turn reinforcesthe resonance of his works as a whole. Both the detail and overall compositioncontribute to the movement of the work.
“Human beings, birds, animals, insects,etc. Day and night, there is movement. Life is movement!” With these words,Jivya Soma Mashe describes the profound emotion that brings the Warli soul tolife.
Jivya Soma Mashe was born in the Warli tribe, only 200kilometres north of Mumbai. His story is very unique. Abandoned by his familyat a young age, he became completely mute and turned to drawing as his solemeans of expression. The Warli tradition of making art was previouslyephemeral, practiced only during Warli rituals, but Jivya Soma Mashe drew everyday, attracting the attention of top government officials in charge ofpreserving and promoting Warli art. The artist’s talent quickly spread acrossthe country, and in 1976, he received India’s most prestigious art awards. Fromhis withdrawal period as a child, Jivya Soma Mashe has kept his exceptionalsense of imagination and emotion.
