CHIBA

2025

Jean Jullien

Painting

133 x 197

“Chiba” depicts a surfing session with Japanese friends in Tokyo Bay. The work belongs to a group of places and moments that pictorially trace 2025, the year the artists spent in Japan. The title of the canvas often serves as the sole geographical anchor. The composition is therefore reduced to its essentials: a variation of waves and light, traversed by a discreet human presence, capturing a moment of osmosis between humankind and nature.

Born in 1983

Graduate of Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art, Jean Jullien develops a cross-disciplinary artistic practice spanning drawing, painting, installation, and moving image. Through simple forms and an immediately recognizable visual vocabulary, he explores contemporary behaviors, human relationships, and our relationship to images with humor and clarity. His works function as familiar yet ambiguous signs, oscillating between lightness and gravity, revealing the fragility of human connections and the quiet poetry of everyday life.
