Regarding canvasses as the pages of apainter’s diary, Zao Wou-Ki uses the date on which they were executed as theirtitle. There is a truly poetic sense emanating from his evocations of subtlylit, “atmospheric” abstract landscapes, about which Henri Michaux once wrote:“revealing while disassembling, breaking the direct line or making it tremble, musing and tracing the detours of the rambling and the spidery scrawl of thedreaming mind, that is what Zao Wou-Ki loves, and suddenly with the samefestive air that enlivens Chinese villages and country scenes, the picture appears, quivering joyfully and somewhat comically in an orchard of signs.”

The friendships he formed with Sam Francis, Riopelle, Soulages, Hartung, Giacometti and Vieira da Silva, together with his discovery of the works of Paul Klee, in 1951, led to his permanent rejection of figurative painting. His Lyrical Abstraction mixes his Far-Eastern heritage with avant-garde western tendencies in cosmic visions that instead of seeking to reproduce forms seem to help painting emerge out of the original chaos.
