Jan Kolata

Painting

190 x 190 cm

Acrylic on canvas

The work of Jan Kolata is made of colours and transparencies. He paints on his canvasses laid down on the floor. At first, he pours, often without looking, diluted acrylic colours on the canvas, then he alters this layer by scraping it with different tools, often purchased from construction supply stores (especially squeegees for cleaning windows, big brushes, rags, sponges, even  sanders). This forms an amalgamation out of which the idea and form of the work gradually emerge. It’s not a preconception but a deliberate action with the material that produces, in a process that is never uniform and leaves room for chance, the artistic outcome.

Born in 1949
Born in 1949, Jan Kolata is a German artist who lives and works in Düsseldorf. He attended the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf between 1970 and 1977.

Obsessed with painting, especially its materiality, he worked with oils for more than twenty years before turning to acrylic, which in his view became high-quality in the 1990s. Throughout his career, he experimented with colour, movement, and superimposition of layers. His delicate artworks draw their force from the subtle interplay of transparency created or shattered by energetic strokes of brush or squeegee. In 1991, Jan Kolata decided to share his passion for painting as a medium and his admiration for the infinite possibilities of composition it offers. As a professor at Kuenstlerhaus Dortmund, he travels to share his experience and fascination holding residencies and conferences in France, Norway, Italy, Russia, and China.
