Born in 1921 in Hellemmes-Lille, France.
Deceased in 1999 in Paris.
Although he trained in architecture at the Beaux-arts in Paris, he quickly turned to painting, and specifically abstraction from 1943. He militated for abstract art along artists such as Poliakoff or Staël, co-founded the Salon des Réalités nouvelles which replaced the Abstraction-Création group from 1946, and was awarded the Kandinsky prize in 1945.
Jean Dewasne’s aim is to move away from any illusion of 3D, he is looking for flat, level paint, providing maximum intensity for all the different shades and hues, and dreams of a material that will allow him to apply large, flat surfaces of pure colours without having any distorting effect. In his quest, he decided to stop working on canvas and moved to metallic surfaces.
