Marc DESGRANDCHAMPS

Painting

200 x 300 cm

"With scraps of memory and chance happenings, I createunclear situations, a no-man’s-land. It’s a bit like a game, with very preciserules, but where one can never predict what the outcome might be: the pieces inmy possession have no identity (figures, objects, landscapes). I set them in acertain light and they become "exhibits". Things disappear -bodies,more or less truncated, or cut through by the landscape -but this is quite reversible:things "appear" also. I call these "abandonments" in anattempt at naming what sometimes looms in the pictures -a sort of state betweenlife and death that can be portrayed in painting, so long as it constitutes atrace."

Born in 1960

Born in 1960 in Sallanches (F). Lives and works in Lyon (F).

Since the beginning of the 1980s, Marc Desgrandchamps hasbeen building works that are out of the ordinary. His work is representative ofhis beginnings (you can see the influence of founding painters of modern art, from Malevitch to Beckmann) and portrays subjects that are isolated and oftenin a time of crisis. Over the years, his work has evolved and become morecomplex, focusing particularly on landscapes with people. Bathing women, beach scenes, and towelsfloating in the breeze are all recurring themes in his work.
