Viviane Sassen’s childhood memories rise to the surface of her highly symbolic photographs of South Africa, Zambia, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Her frequent exploratory journeys produce portraits with a striking use of pure colours and a subtle play of light and shadow. Take, for example, this Elvis with a red flower who seems to be getting ready for a ritual ceremony behind a mysterious white smoke screen.

Born in 1972
Born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Lives and works between the Netherlands and Africa.

After studying design at Arnhem College of Art and photography in Utrecht, Viviane Sassen soon made a name for herself in fashion photography, working for Vogue, Purple, i-D and Another Man. In 2002, she decided to go back to Africa, to retrace the memories of her childhood spent in Kenya, where her father had worked as a doctor. Since then, she has travelled all over this continent that fascinates her and has brought back series entitled The Sun Sees Everything, Flamboya and Ultra Violet, all impregnated with a spellbinding “magical realism”.
