Somewhere between German Romanticism and magical Brazilian realism, Janaina Tschäpe’s very personal mythology is peopled with hybrid creatures and dreamlike landscapes. Lives and works in New York and Rio de Janeiro.
This Germano-Brazilian artist first attracted attention in the late 1990s with her autofictional performances. Whether stretched out as if dead in the heart of a hundred different landscapes, wandering like a ghost around Rheims Cathedral, or playing a mermaid equipped with silicone wings, this multifaceted artist works in a variety of media, including photography, video, painting and installations, as she invents her sculptural, magical narratives.
