Yvan Salomone

Works on paper

95 x 138 cm

Watercolour on paper

Since 1991, the working method of this serial artist has been governed by a strictly coded ritual: one watercolour a week, always the same size, “corresponding to the home screening of a slide or film on the kitchen wall”. The titles that he attributes to his works are similarly ritualistic. They are all made up of three figures and one word: the first figure indicates the number of the watercolour; the second and third indicate the date on which it was executed; the word always contains eleven letters.

For a Breton to be fascinated by ports is hardly surprising. What is more unusual about this artist is his attachment to the somewhat outmoded genre of watercolour painting, which, in his case, is based on the photographs he takes in his native town of Saint-Malo, or in New York, Shanghai and Rotterdam. The end results are strangely empty, hazy views of docks and industrial areas.
