Philippe DECRAUZAT

Painting

200 x 119 cm

Acrylic on canvas

In this piece, the frame follows the undulationof the motif, but only in part as the sides are clear cut. Philippe Decrauzatformalises the illusion by using an undulating, kinetic motif inherent to “opart”, and combining it with a large-scale shaped canvas. He thereby physicallyengages the viewer by immerging him in an experiment with perspective, wherethe viewer can deconstruct or freeze the image.

Philippe Decrauzat explores the history of twentieth-century abstraction through his canvases, sculptures, films and installations. The artist nevertheless takes a critical distance from this heritage and its claimed “autonomy” compared with other disciplines. And so he embarks on a coded exploration, drawing secretly from popular visual culture and the repertoire of abstract art forms to produce new images. Each of these sources is accurately deconstructed, presenting a new angle or an outside interference that disrupts how the viewer receives the image. Painting therefore comes across as a tired and biased reproduction of the forms preceding it: it bends the strict codes of Minimal Art using the visual distortions of Optical Art.
