Gabriele HERZOG

Mixed media

180 x 120 cm

Oil stick, acrylic, oil and gesso on raw cotton canvas

In Lemon Sky and her other paintings, Gabriele Herzog explores positive and negative space through the contrast between subtle and bold applications of paint. Areas of quiet and neutrality are juxtaposed with intensely dynamic elements.

According to Sascha Gianella, Gabriele Herzog’s shapes, “even if geometrical, are organic and amorphous, and seem to float and vibrate with a serene subtlety and a dramatic effect. Aiming to express the essential, Gabriele applies very little material on the canvas and uses combinations of paintings and thoughts that through her brush, keep her works in precarious balance.”

Gabriele HERZOG
Suisse
Born in 1965

Swiss painter Gabriele Herzog graduatedfrom the Basel School of Design and the University of London. Her work was presented in collective and solo shows in Europe and the United States, as well as in several publications. She now works and lives between London and Berlin.

In her abstract paintings, her minimalistic approach is evidenced by her lack of interference with her canvas. She focuses on geometry, line, and colour without attempting to represent an outside reality, creating tension and harmony. She uses raw untreated canvas to express only the essential andcreates by taking away rather than adding.
