Gérard Garouste
France
Born in 1946
French painter.
Garouste soon became the leader of a post-modern movement, whose intention was a back to basics of great painting, promoting the mastery of technique to render the subject. In 1983 he undertook an order for a ceiling in the Elysée palace.
Full of mythological and biblical references, his work is marked by a dark and even tragic atmosphere in which characters reappear as symbols of a strange kind of theatricality.
The two etchings presented here are characteristic of the artist’s taste for luxurious baroque and are clearly inspired by theatre, characters and décor.
