Jivya Soma Mashe was born in the Warli tribe, only 200kilometres north of Mumbai. His story is very unique. Abandoned by his familyat a young age, he became completely mute and turned to drawing as his solemeans of expression. The Warli tradition of making art was previouslyephemeral, practiced only during Warli rituals, but Jivya Soma Mashe drew everyday, attracting the attention of top government officials in charge ofpreserving and promoting Warli art. The artist’s talent quickly spread acrossthe country, and in 1976, he received India’s most prestigious art awards. Fromhis withdrawal period as a child, Jivya Soma Mashe has kept his exceptionalsense of imagination and emotion.
