David Gilbert
1980
USA
Trained in photography and visual arts in the United States, David Gilbert develops a practice that explores intimacy, fragility, and the image as a space of projection. Drawing on ephemeral arrangements made of fabrics, paint, and plays of light, he constructs staged environments that he then photographs. Paintings, sometimes visible within the images themselves, enable him to produce more direct forms, extending his engagement with surface and materiality. This dual process deliberately slows the production of images, compared to the spontaneous nature of the photographic medium. By isolating precarious moments destined to disappear, David Gilbert transforms the photographic act into a gesture of preservation, closely tied to the space and time of creation.
