Societe Generale Private Banking Switzerland (SGPBS) is delighted to announce that Hannah Weinberger has won the Swiss Emerging Artist Prize 2018, a contemporary art prize rewarding the originality and coherence of her artistic approach.
Through the use of music and sound performance, Hannah Weinberger creates audio and visual atmospheres. Hannah creates her compositions using field recordings, her own voice, those around her, preset samples and the public space. By integrating these compositions into videos or sculptural elements, she creates unique environments. Furthermore, she invites the viewer to take part in immersive and participative experiences.
“The SGPBS Swiss Emerging Artist Prize means so much to me. It is both an incredible spotlight on my work and a precious support for my future projects"says Hannah on finding out she was the winner of the award.
The jury, comprising Staffan Ahrenberg, Andrea Bellini, Aurélie Deplus, Elena Filipovic and Simon de Pury, officially announced the winner at a gala event organised by the Bank. Hannah Weinberger was awarded the Swiss Emerging Artist Prize 2018 trophy and the sum of CHF 20,000.
Elena Filipovic, Director of the Kunsthalle Basel and member of the jury, commented: “We were thrilled to be able to agree on the exceptional merit of Hannah Weinberger, an artist who has articulated a clear aesthetic vocabulary and a maturity beyond her years, for this first SGPBS art prize.”
SGPBS warmly thanks all fifteen talented artists who participated in this first edition of the Swiss Emerging Artist Prize: Brigham Baker, Vittorio Brodmann (finalist), Timothée Calame (finalist), Chloé Delarue, Gina Folly, Mathis Gasser, Lauren Huret, Thomas Julier, Sonia Kacem (finalist), Judith Kakon, Marco Scorti (finalist), Jan Vorisek, Hannah Weinberger (winner), Manon Wertenbroek and Seyoung Yoon.
Alongside classical music, contemporary art is one of the two cornerstones of Societe Generale group's cultural patronage. This initiative which confirms the commitment of the Group and Societe Generale Private Banking in contemporary art will be rolled out in other locations of the Private Bank with an upcoming digital art prize by Kleinwort Hambros, its UK-based entity.
A long-term commitment
Taking place every 2 years, SGPBS created the Swiss Emerging Artist Prize as part of its long-term commitment to the local contemporary art scene. The prize is intended to support and provide visibility to the work of local emerging talents aged up to 35, who have made a coherent and original artistic contribution in one or more of the following fields: painting, photography, sculpture, installation art, drawing and video.
Biography of the winner:
Hannah Weinberger is a Swiss artist, born in 1988. She has a degree in Fine Art from the Zurich
University of Art and since 2016 she lectures at the Art Institute in Basel.
