Within “Constellations”, imagery directly pulled from children’s fairy tales painted on small canvases operate as portals into other worlds. This photo is a rare use of artificial light in Gilbert’s work, with otherworldly glow that inspired the title of the work. The imagery within, archetypal and symbolic, is related to the Greek and Roman myths that give name to our constellations. The juxtaposition of this imagery doesn’t adhere to a strict narrative, but rather creates a constellation of images, giving depth to both the name and symbols present within the work.
Trained in photography and visual arts in the United States, David Gilbert develops a practice that explores intimacy, fragility, and the image as a space of projection. Drawing on ephemeral arrangements made of fabrics, paint, and plays of light, he constructs staged environments that he then photographs. Paintings, sometimes visible within the images themselves, enable him to produce more direct forms, extending his engagement with surface and materiality. This dual process deliberately slows the production of images, compared to the spontaneous nature of the photographic medium. By isolating precarious moments destined to disappear, David Gilbert transforms the photographic act into a gesture of preservation, closely tied to the space and time of creation.
