SANS TITRE

Louis GRANET

Painting

197 x 135 cm

"I begin my paintings with the pictorialmaterial, which I outline in black to produce a kind of physicality. Inpainting, I try from a technical point of view to get as close as possible to aform of reality. Of course, it is not reality, not least because my paintingscontinue to be greatly inspired by my cartoon practice with the slightlygrotesque aspect that characterizes it. "

Louis Granet has in fact always been a great drawingenthusiast, which led him to begin studying at the Ecole de Bande Dessinée inAngoulême, before going on to the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs inStrasbourg.

"I split the canvas into several parts in afairly radical way to structure it, I highlight certain details. Unlike withcartoons, the object I represent can be self-sufficient, I don’t have tointroduce or explain its presence or make it identifiable."

Louis GRANET
France
Born in 1991

Having graduated from the Arts Décoratifs inStrasbourg in 2014, Louis Granet lives and works in Paris.

His artistic practice is rooted in the links between cartoonsand painting. The artist has developed the techniques and codes learned fromthe cartoon genre, and applies them on several different media. Signs, lines, and shapes represent the starting point of his aesthetic research. There-appropriation of images and superimposing them has a tendency to disorientthe public: the onlooker is confronted with not only abstract forms but alsofigurative and physical images.

Nevertheless, Louis Granet’s pictorial research, bothclouded and partially explicit, leaves a great deal to the observer’simagination.

The variety of forms and materials used, as well asthe different perspectives, create multi-layered compositions which suggest thekeys to a number of interpretations.
