Rock Never 3

2003

Liqing XIANG

Photography

200 x 100 cm

Xiang Liqing first became known in France via his Rock Never series of photographs of stacked buildings that have been digitally remastered. Public housing is depicted with dark humour and yet, as one looks closer, we see that each balcony is decorated in a different manner, that a window is open and that leaves soften the view. Hope is slight but nonetheless present.

Born in 1973 in Shaoxing, China.
Lives and works in Shanghai.
Xiang Liqing graduated from the Department of Oil Painting of the Academy of Fine Arts in China in 1995. Today, he is considered to be one of the most promising artists of his generation. A prolific artist and enigmatic figure, Xiang Liqing's work blends painting, photography, installations and sculpture to express his existential concerns with humour and poetry. Constantly navigating between an offbeat slant on society and a desire to capture the immutable part of any being and the things that surround it, his work far exceeds its Chinese context. Neither openly political nor entirely conceptual, Xiang Liqing's work is discrete and never confrontational, circumspect but nonetheless optimistic.
