Photography

153 x 120 cm

Panos Kokkinias’ photographs propose an extremely precise record of elements of our everyday life, of buildings and people, which nonetheless hint at a mysterious, invisible presence. The sense of familiarity bordering on banality that his images first inspire then gives way to a more troubling sentiment bordering on mystery.
Searching for gestures and situations that escapes attention, fascinated by preserving traces, he uses his camera lens to reveal what was intended to remain hidden. Panos Kokkinias photographs always carefully describe a familiar environment. There is nothing more commonplace that rain falling on a asphalt road, as shown here. Yet one quickly realizes that these apparently ordinary places are merely the setting for a more complex story. The handling of the light heightens this mysterious, if not disquieting atmosphere.

Panos Kokkinias studied at the New York School of Visual Arts and obtained a Masters in Photography from Yale University School of Art. He was a student of Gregory Crewdson and Philip-Lorca di Corcia.

Panos Kokkinias’s photographs evoke the humancondition in all its fragility and uncertainty. The allure of these imagesgives way to a visceral confusion that perturbs the spectator and raisesquestions regarding the existentialist conflict of mankind, without offeringany answers. In these works, the landscapes act as metaphors for interiorworlds.
