The balanced composition, in which the line is deliberately angular, is based on solid, strongly structured zones of colour. Lemaire works on the pigment of colours in shade, and the masses of red ochre, brown ochre, earth and slate combine with the swathes of light creating subtle passages of contrasting tones.
