In the summer of 2014, James Welling started to choreographand photograph art students at the University of California in Los Angeles.Next, he used Photoshop to apply RGB colour layers onto the black and whitephotographs, which he had in the meantime placed on top of pictures ofarchitecture and landscapes in order to create complex images.
The Choreograph project (2014-2015) enriches an explorationof three-colour printing with the surprising presence of the human form in theartist’s work.
Born 1951 in Hartford, Connecticut. Lives and works in LosAngeles.
He studied at Carnegie Mellon University and the Universityof Pittsburgh and received his B.F.A. and M.F.A. from the California Instituteof the Arts in Valencia, California.
James Welling works with representation and its relationshipwith reality. He has been exploring the medium of photography since the 1970s,experimenting with all the technical methods available, from capturing an imageto the endless options for developing it.
