Jean-Paul Dumas-Grillet

Photography

150 x 180 cm 12/12

Photograph

Jean-Paul Dumas-Grillet likes to let his eye wander over things until a vision suddenly and naturally comes to him. His photographs are born of these moments captured by surprise. To quote him  “a successful photograph is one that is still slightly hazy, as if covered by a veil before the vision occurs. The nature of the revelation is still uncertain, but its arrival is clearly imminent”.

As a photographer of film sets, Jean-Paul Dumas-Grillet learnt to let his gaze wander over people and objects until the right vision came to him. Seeking to suspend time, his freeze-frames do not strive to capture the moment but reveal another, quasi-supernatural dimension. His different series always endeavour to bring about a minor miracle: to captivate the spectator before he or she even knows why.
